I've finally escaped from big shave's rip off where eight replacement blades can cost upwards of $30, see http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/what-gillette-razor-do-i-have-here.33042/

For those here at UT that wet shave I highly recommend this type of razor. I've never had such good shaves, and best of all 100 replacement blades are less than $30 online, http://www.italianbarber.com/razor-blades or 10 for $15 at Shoppers Drug. I paid $5.99 for five blades at the new Rexall in Cabbagetown... a great drugstore BTW.

I use a safety razor! I have saved so much money, and get a better shave.
The Rocket Razor is so nice! Where did yo get it?
 
A blast from the past! I have used a Mach 3 Gillette for several years but on reading the Admiral's posting I (rather to my surprise) unearthed my old razor. It turns out to be a Made in Canada 1932 (patent date) Gillette. Must pick up some old fashioned blades and give it another try.
 
Thanks for the tip on blades, I haven't had to buy a pack for my Merkur since I got it a year and a half ago (I have a beard and use it to keep my neck and cheeks clean). I flip the blades to get a bit of extra life out of them. I also highly recommend getting a tube of Proraso shaving cream with eucalyptus and menthol to use with your brush (if you don't already own one). I found it shoppers.
 
Another way to lengthen blade life is to spray them with rubbing alcohol afterwards; it picks up any remaining water on the blade and evaporates quickly, reducing damage to the blade by water drops.
 
I already wet shave, but I'll soon be transitioning to a saftey razor. Toronto Barber & Beauty Supply sells them along with the blades (I recall a few Merkur's and other brands).

For shaving cream, the Art of Shaving makes some great stuff, but I've found Nivea has a surprisingly good creme for a relatively cheap price at Shoppers.
 
I buy my stuff online from West Coast Shaving. I got a sampler pack of razors from them. 115 blades for $32.50. Pretty awesome!
 
I too buy my stuff online - best source I've found is http://www.fendrihan.com I- bought a 50-blade sampler pack in order to try out a variety of blades, and ended up settling on Astra - feather blades were amazingly sharp but didn't last, whereas I can use the astras for about 2 weeks (shaving once a week). 100 Blades for $14 is about as good as it gets! They also have sampler packs of different shaving creams, and this is a great way to try out a bunch of amazing scents!
 
I'm a wet shaver too. I decided to try it when i stumbled across the Badger & Blade forum about 5 years ago. God knows how much money I've saved since then. I use a Merkur razor with Astra blades, Proraso shaving soap and a badger hair brush. And my dad gave me his old Gillette from the 60s. Can't say I'm a big fan of it but it's nice to have.
 
I was using a Merkur 34C for several months but as I am an impatient shaver I found myself getting nicks more and more as I was always rushing. Never took the proper time to prep and pre-soak, which always made for a better shave. (Ended up going back to the Mach 3, which I had been using just for touch-ups.) Was using Feather blades and a badger brush, and picked up a tub of Art of Shaving last time I was in the US. Will be switching for something without parabens, though. I did enjoy the Nivea and Real Shaving Co. creams that I tried.

Also used Fendrihan for ordering and would recommend them. All this shaving talk is making me want to get back into the safety razor thing again. Still have several packages of blades sitting in my cabinet and find the cost of replacement blades for the Mach 3 and Pro-Glide to be reprehensible. Think I paid $20-30 for 100 blades on eBay.
