    Default Ryugyong Hotel

For those of you familiar with Pyongyang's "Hotel of Doom", aka the Ryugyong Hotel, started in the late 80s and abandoned as an enormous (105 story) unfinished shell in the early 90s, it has apparently now been finished enough to partially open later this spring.

(for those of you who don't know the whole story, Google it. Creepily fascinating.)

The Star article has some details about how the photos were obtained and plans for the structure:

(The comments are amusing, especially the folks who think this thing is better than the condos being built in Toronto.)

If it actually opens as a hotel, I'll be stunned. I know there were real concerns about the integrity of the concrete.

Sorry to stir up an old thread with nothing more than an article dump, but I found it interesting to hear that the plans for an operational Ryugyong by the 2nd or 3rd quarter have been put on hold. Given all the recent tension on the Korean peninsula, it should come as no surprise.
