Tbay is a neat city - a bit down on its luck in the past few years but not down and out by any means. It's too bad it is so isolated (relatively speaking), it'd be a great place to live.

Thunder Bay (really 2 distinct cities side by side)

Is a fine community outside of 2 very depressing 'downtowns' and a still fairly industrial port area, which makes for a less than 'pretty' waterfront, despite striking views.

They built a mall....'intercity' ? It really snuffed a lot of the downtown retail, one of the downtowns also had a mall in it, but when I went it was nearly 1/2 vacant.

There are definitely some great 'bones'

But I would argue that 'Lakehead' should have been built next to one of the downtowns, and they need to tear down that suburban mall and move the anchor retail back to the care area(s) as well in order to get things working as they should be.

Can't really knock an active working port, but they could still do a better job on the landscaping in the area.

Thunder Bay has a beautiful name but the city itself looks horrible. One can't possibly pay me to live there.

Flar: Neat tour of Thunder Bay...The former cities of Fort William and Port Arthur...

Which one was the larger of the two and had the larger Downtown area?

I find these cities interesting noting how isolated they actually are...
I know the City is located there because it is an important Great Lakes port...

I noted some brick homes in some of the pictures...Are there many of those there and since
I noticed "twins" are there any row homes there? Is stone used there in house construction?

What ethnics live in TB? I noticed that there are Italians there noting the Squitti's store...

TB looks like it would be a neat place to visit but living there noting the tough winters they
have as an example would be a whole other matter...

Mike, as someone familiar with Thunder Bay I can chime in and answer your questions.

Port Arthur was the slightly larger of the two cities with a larger and nicer downtown as it is situated on a hill overlooking the Thunder Bay Harbor.

All Brick construction was common for homes built in the early part of the 1900's however most homes built from the 60's onward usually have Brick on the front facing wall only and the other three walls are finished in stucco (something I think that is peculiar to this part of Canada).

There are newer row homes but none of the brownstone variety that you may be thinking of. Stone is rare but can be found on some of the grander homes.

Aside from Anglo-Saxons the other major ethnic groups are the Finns ,Italian, Ukrainian and of course a large (and growing larger) Native Canadian ("First Nations") population. It is said that Thunder Bay had the second largest Finish population in the world after Helsinki. If you look at a Map of Thunder Bay you will notice many small towns with Finish names. There used to be a small but influential Jewish community but few are left today. David Letterman's Band Leader - Paul Schaffer is a native of Thunder Bay.

As you can see from the pictures Thunder Bay is a city that has seen much better times but the natural beauty of the surrounding areas is something to behold. The scenery can be breathtakingly beautiful as Flar has captured in his pictures.
