Looking at a floorplan for two story townhome. How much square footage is typical for a staircase? I have heard anything from 100 to 200 square feet! I think that would eat up into a big chunk of the overall square footage provided, for example if it is a 1000 square foot townhome, that would be 10 to 20%! Thanks.

yup, which is why i hate condo TH vs freehold since your maintenance fees are based on SQ FT.

by code, stairs and hallways need to be at least 3 feet wide each. length can vary from 10 ft + depending on ceiling height.
so multiply the width x length of stairwell x # of floors

Thanks for the calculation, so for 2 floors I'm assuming 3 x 10 x 2 = 60 at least? I think probably more if there are 9 foot ceilings. So its not quite as bad as I suspected
