Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

So THAT's how it was done. One of Lawrence's photos was this one of the Hamilton Steel works http://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/pan.6a23357/ I thought that this was too early for aerial photography by a few years. I thought it was a 1917 photo, with a typo in the date. Never thought of a kite.

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

It's a pedestrian safety fender, designed to catch pedestrians who walk in front of streetcars It's hard for us to imagine now, but the introduction of the electric streetcar was completely revolutionary in several ways. One of those was the increase in danger to pedestrians. See, for...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

According to family legend, my Gggg-grandfather Thomas Storm (father of Toronto architect William Storm) built the gallows that was used to hang the captured rebels after the 1837 rebellion. Had Mackenzie been caught, he'd have swung also.

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Early 1930s at the latest. In the ca 1936 photo a fire escape's been added and the sign 'DANCING' is gone, so it's before then. Contrast with the 1931 photo. At the earliest, the tracks were laid in 1892.

For more on the Blitz and what it did on a neighbourhood scale, take a look at this episode of Time Team http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buS8203B1Dg Found this interesting comment on the page: "Something very cool: Go to Google Maps, type in 'Shoreditch Park London UK'. Zoom in to the north...

It's been covered back up, but this is what was under the siding on the northwest corner

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Mustapha, are you sure about the date on the now picture? Because the trees have no leaves and the people seem overdressed for summer. (Also, the price of gas at the station is about 10 cents higher than the June average in Toronto, according to GasBuddy.com. But it matches the average price...

    East Danforth

So as they're renovating the former Zellers at Shoppers World into a Target, they've been removing the old siding, and exposing the original brickwork on the west side. judging by its condition, it's been around for a while

    Urban Wilderness!

I'm not certain as to the exact boundaries of the FVOEC. Back in the 80s and 90s when I was a kid and I'd visit the Forest Valley, depending on the school trip we'd hike anywhere between Finch and the flood control structure on the north side of the Koffler gallery/Jewish Community centre...

    Urban Wilderness!

Figures-I'm out of town, and we get to my old stomping grounds on the West Don. The area known as the Hinder property was named after the Hinder family. Originally it was called Chuckle Hollow, after the laugh William MacKenzie had when evading government troops during his flight after the 1837...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

No idea what the facility was, but from Google Earth's historical images it looks more like a warehouse or factory than a shopping plaza (very little parking for cars and lots of transport trucks) From Google Earth's images, I make the following observations -The site originally held three...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Judging by the placement of the windows and the door, I think that the flat fronted building in the before photo was heavily renovated and extended to the left, rather than torn down and replaced with something newer.

And according to Wikipedia it can't be any later than 1994, which is when CIBC stopped using their 'chevron' logo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Imperial_Bank_of_Commerce

    Anybody know what this is?

I think Goldie's right, I think this this is an old bridge for utilities, i.e gas, water, sewage. I'd guess that when the zoo was built it was so far from the rest of the city utilities that a special route was laid from the west just for the needed utilities. Later, when Scarborough expanded...
