Next Mayor of Toronto?

I'm getting more indications tonight that both Chow and Tory will run. Chow was all but confirmed but Tory was still very much on the fence. He seems convinced now. Chow will announce in late January or early February, Tory will wait til later (maybe as late as Summer) when Ford and Chow are bloodied and Tory can come in as a clean and sane alternative. It's going to be a long and interesting year.

Where are you getting these indications?

Chavez was a kleptocrat? Wow, way off topic, but it tells me all I need to know about your world view.

This is a funny response that I often get on the internet considering I myself am considered to be rather leftist. It is a funny tendency how leftists defend "Socialist leaders" like Chavez in droves just because they think Chavez advocated for socialist ideals similar to their own. The reality is Chavez and his successor are more similar to Robert Mugabe than the mythical champion of socialism that various youtube documentaries have convinced you.

The right in Venezuela has been dead for awhile now, Chavez made sure of that years ago. (Interestingly, they moved to Alberta to work in the oil industry!) The former opposition leader in the previous two elections, Henrique Capriles, is center-left and advocates for Brazilian style social democracy. If you wanted to see a true leftist leader take power in Venezuela, you would have desired to see Capriles win the elections. Ergo, the past elections saw a significant shift in Chavez/Maduro's support; many left-wing Chavistas who put Chavez in power originally shifted to an actual leftish leader in Capriles, alongside with the Venezuelan youth whose voting pattern landslided in favor of Capriles.

As to Chavez and his successor Maduro being a kleptocrat, they only advocate for populist policies, whatever it takes to consolidate and retain power. Between 2009 and 2011 when I lived in the country, I've seen them pass both far-right straight up fascist policies and far-left policies. The Bolivarian revolution replaced the existing 'bourgeoisie' with a class of Chavista bourgeoisie filled with members of the ruling party and their friends and families, given governmental and bureaucratic jobs and positions. What subsequently followed was a mass-robbing of Venezuela's wealth both from the country and from the nationalized businesses. Yes the country is by definition a kleptocracy, the ruling class are kleptocrats.

Now I am seeing Maduro destroy the country, inflation has skyrocketed, there is nothing in stores; not even toilet-paper, people can't afford food, basic infrastructure is failing, and crime continues to go up. And this isn't even going into the massive influence Cuba has on Venezuela today, there are some rather dainty parallels to colonialism in Cuban-Venezuelan relations.

Forgive me if I don't continue this conversation however. Not only is it off-topic, it is too personal to me. I've lived in Venezuela for two years and experienced enough that I don't ever intend on returning to the country and over the past year I have lost my mother to Venezuela as well. She has become overly engrossed with all news coming from Venezuela in a vile and extremely partisan manner. I've spent the past year avoiding my own mother because every moment with her is a discussion of what 'Maduro did today' or other similar scandals. Perhaps I'm being melodramatic but I would say it's one of the contributing factors as to why I decided to move out of my parents home. Not talking or thinking about Venezuela makes me a happier person.

That happened to me with Ford. It's like a cancer, eating away at my focus each day as I hang on every bit of news just hoping he'll finally be held responsible for something. Bouncing between here and #topoli several times a day, can't let it go. And I'm not even in Toronto anymore (although I'd prefer to be if I could find an affordable place to live).

Oh boy... I just hope Chow v. Tory won't propel Ford into reelection.

And your incredulous reply confirms your leftist views. Both Chavez & the rightist clique that proceeded him served Venezuela terribly.

Actually, given that I said nothing about why I believe it is wrong to call Chavez a kleptocrat, I think you're quite wrong to say that my post reveals anything about my own political views. To reciprocate your presumptuousness, can I accept your abject, sincere and unconditional apology in advance?

If that appears to be Tory's strategy then I'd think Chow would wait too, let the others battle it out leaving nothing but scattered body parts and a still-standing but bloodied Ford by summer. Once Tory or Chow enter the race, the other follows and it begins anew with two energetic, fresh entries going at him. Then I'd hope based on a couple of months of polling that one or the other drops out and runs one-on-one with Ford. Either one, though I'd prefer Chow. We can also hope for a certain recording to go public sometime in the summer or fall, amidst all the flying entrails (Doug promised it will get bloody).

Hahahaha... OK, then, vox. You have been one of the most vocal anti-Fordites on this thread, and, IIRC, mostly from a leftist POV rather than my personal 'Ford's screamingly incompetant' POV. Feel free to take this off-line with a DM. Assuming you do, and you convince me, you have my abject, sincere, and unconditional apology.

Although he did criticize Ford, Tory has been pretty respectful of Ford these past few months. If his support is low part way through the year, I could see Ford dropping out and going for his brothers Councillor seat. All Tory would ask is that Ford NOT publically throw his support to Tory.

Heh, we've all been there one time or another. I was like you for a good two weeks in November in regards to Ford and for another week in the summer surrounding the Scarborough Subway/LRT debate.

I don't blame my mom as what is happening to her country is a reason to get upset and proactive about, however, there comes a point where it becomes an unhealthy obsession and the driven motivator to wake up the next day or return home from work, shun family dinners, household responsibilities and so forth. What frustrates me the most though is not the obsession, it is the blind partisanship as I stated in my previous post. The inability to understand or even conceive that the other side has an argument just baffles me. It is the most unhealthy form of political activism possible, period. Regardless of political spectrum, beliefs or ideologues. I think that is something we can all agree on here, regardless of our usually conflicting opinions, beliefs and viewpoints.

It's called Fordophobia Disorder, many of us have been through it. The condition is temporary, so long as the treatment plan is followed by the patient which includes limiting or eliminating local news programs, late night talk shows, City Council broadcasts, print and online media.

No chance - Tory would eat up a big chunk of the middle and right votes. Chow vs Ford might propel Ford into a second term though.

I don't understand why the media continues to give Ford so much airtime/paper space. Yes, Car crashes and tragedies generate readership, but really?
