Next Mayor of Toronto?

I hope you know a right-wing mayor will stop all infrastructure spending!!

Curious, but exactly how would you know this to be a fact?

The city will get infrastructure money from the province and the federal government, and city government will spend that money on infrastructure - regardless of the politics of the mayor.

exactly..for sure he stop giving money to pet projects and special interest groups.Get tough on crime and at least make attempt to save money.Miller and his socialist clan is NOT in touch of the city pulse,he just spends and spends on projects that offers little in returns, pampers the unions fat cats and will not listen to alternative suggestions from the more center to right members.A true egotistic mayor that shouldnt even be in office if there was a decent member than ran against him.

How about some "programs" instead of political incorrect name callings.....here we go..

programs to teach youth to do graffiti

programs to provide free wine to street people

programs to force landlords to rent to "uncredited" renters

programs to force business to clean up vandals (graffiti idiots)

programs to allow drug users to "shoot up" in a safe area where police cannot arrest them

taxing businesses a "surcharge" if they do not clean up trash that is left on their property by drug users and drunks.

program to teach youths to not beg for money on the streets rather to "politely" as for a donation so they cannot be charged???..this is true I heard
this from a police buddy.

...more to come...

Like all ideologues, right-wingers have their own pet projects. Many of them centre on law-enforcement (police helicopters, etc.).

You mean like the approved murals under railway underpasses and like Bathurst and Wilson? They look good, not like the tagging and "graffiti 'art'"

programs to allow drug users to "shoot up" in a safe area where police cannot arrest them

Yep, because drug addicts are criminals, right? Because such sites provide at least for safe places where you won't be spreading blood diseases?

The best thing about right-wingers is that they have no sense of humour.

Some of those don't cost the city anything, while others are quite financially insignificant. Maybe if this was a small town, these programs would be of concern. Some of those are quite intuitive, like forcing people to maintain clean properties and encouraging doing street art with permission and skill, rather than tagging random properties without permission.

In the last municipal election, who was it that promised to build 2km of subways per year, or 2 billion dollars for subways per year or something like that?? I think it was Pitfield, but I can't be sure.

whinners and moaners

Miller and his socialist clan is NOT in touch of the city pulse...,pampers the unions fat cats and will not listen to alternative suggestions from the more center to right members.A true egotistic mayor that shouldnt even be in office if there was a decent member than ran against him.

get real, we live in a socialist country! who is Miller not in touch with? I think you mean he's not in touch with the whinners and moaners who have wasted their mandate carping about him instead of doing the job we elected them for. and, I believe he won against a number of decent people. the problem with Toronto is the apathy of the citizens.

we did not elect him to raise taxes,to tax anything he can think off.During hard times he must take a lead and reduce spending by the members.Where is his leadership during the Sunrise explosion, where was leadership during the year of the gun, where is his leadership anywhere during a crisis?.The only thing I see him is at photo ops and at meetings where "new creative taxes" are apply.Toronto was never a left wing city,it was a liberal city. The empathy of the voters is the problem, the real voice of the majority is never heard, the small group of "WHINERS" from the left is leading Toronto to be second rated city in the eyes of the world.Tourist rating by CAA has Toronto rated behind 6 canadian cities as a return location by foreign visitors, they werent too impress by the image we have the first time.

Can you say "Barbara Hall"?

I don't think you are familiar with Toronto politics. we elect these people to manage the City and I don't remember Miller being elected to reduce spending. where did that come from? currently he has a 56% approval rating. we should be focused on the Council not just the Mayor. there's 44 of them, each costing us a fortune and how many are really doing the job for us? as far as I can see it's been the right wing that has wasted our vote to smarten-up City Hall. all these so-called right wingers can do is carp on and on about Miller instead of giving us value for money. the left wingers appear to have a decent approval rating. your problem seems to be that you don't like being unpopular. you'd be typical if you were one of those right wing Councillors.

yes what a wasteful project. Helping the police better do work to catch criminals.

Nice comment...

The truth is Miller has under his term allowed the city to be taken over by the unions who at any time can take the city hostage and imo that should not happen. Helping the Unions is not public policy, its a policy that benefits the few and is wasteful and protectionist.

Why private companies cannot help the city do certain things is beyond me. Its the Unions that built these clauses into their contract limiting outsourcing of their work. Is this truly benefiting us?? No, its to benefit them.

That is what Miller has done and it is disgraceful and wasteful.

I would not like a hard right mayor, but a Mayor who would stand up to the Unions would be preferred.

The city spends 8 billion dollars a year which is just insane. Clearly the budget is fat and bloated.

Someone needs to stand up to those unions or IMO the TTC will never get modernized and the city budget will continue to be unsustainable. I truly believe they are holding the city back,

44 better qualified Councillors

Citizens in trade unions are only doing what is natural. Doing whatever it takes to improve their lot in life. The issue is management and there is a distinct lack of that skill in Council. If this City is directed by Council you need only look at its composition to see where things are going wrong. The city needs a leader with acquired management skills. Miller promised the broom and nothing has changed since. Break the unions and we'll only be paying less. Cultivate management skills and we'll get self-sustaining greater returns. We need only to get 44 better qualified Councillors to do that.

we did not elect him to raise taxes,to tax anything he can think off.

Actually, we did. Miller was pretty clear in his first campaign that he was rejecting Lastman's legacy of a crumbling city that would not increase taxes. In his second campaign, he promised to keep taxes in line with inflation. That is, he promised to increase taxes.

It was also clear, in the last election that a plan was in the works with the Province to grant the city more powers - the most important of those being new taxation powers. Unless you were not paying attention, it was clear that new taxes were coming.

So, if you voted for Miller, you voted for higher and more taxes.

Toronto was never a left wing city,it was a liberal city.

Not really true. In Toronto municipal politics, Liberals are the right wing.

Toronto has a history of activist municipal government that believes in funding generous municipal services and infrastructure with higher than average taxes. The province gets away with charging higher education taxes in Toronto than other municipalities because Toronto's education taxes were always higher. Of course, Toronto used to make up for that by having a better funded public school system than the surrounding Municipalities. Now, we pay more but get the same funding as everyone else.

Miller's preference for investment over frugality is quite consistent with the city's traditions.

MAYOR MILLER ON TAX INCREASES:

"In the last three years, we've kept property tax increases at a reasonable level in line with inflation and that is my commitment for the next four." (Mayor Miller's inaugural address, December 5, 2006

As reported November 2, 2006 by CTV News, during the 2006 election campaign: "David Miller: Promising to keep future property tax hikes at or below the rate of inflation".

On top of the property tax increases, Mayor Miller has added the following new taxes:

Municipal Land Transfer Tax

Motor Vehicle Registration Tax

Water Rate Increase of 9%

Garbage Bin Tax

Recreational Program Taxes

JUDGE THE MAYOR'S PROMISE

2008 Property tax increase: 3.75%

Rate of inflation: 2.4%

2007 Property tax increase: 3.8%

Toronto's rate of inflation: 1.5%

Please your encouraging him to fine more things to tax?...if he cut some of the fringe programs and let non union bid on city jobs the city would save millions. He spent 2.8 million renovating his "war room" at city hall and refused to decrease the budget of the members of city hall council.Show me ONE thing he tried to save tax payers money on his table, the only thing I see is a dirty city, taxes upon taxes and a decaying inner core.
