Eglinton Crosstown LRT Moves to Battery Back-Up

Ontario has announced a partnership with Toronto Hydro to build a battery energy storage system for the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit (LRT) line, which will increase the reliability of the line, lower operating costs, and reduce emissions.

Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca and MPP for York-South Weston Laura Albanese visited the future site of Mount Dennis Station and the LRT maintenance and storage facility today to announce the new partnership.

Del Duca, said of the investment in the energy storage installation, “We have listened to your community and are pleased to be able to deliver this alternative energy solution that will respect the concerns of the residents in this area while meeting the needs of the new LRT. This battery energy storage system will provide environmental cost savings that will improve our quality of life as we keep people moving.”

The power system, which is equivalent to a large battery, will be capable of providing backup and emergency power to the LRT line for up to four hours in the event of a wide-spread power outage and replaces previous plans for a natural gas facility.

“Through partnership and collaboration, Metrolinx and Toronto Hydro have arrived at an innovative a solution that will ensure the reliability of service of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line and also respect the concerns of the Mount Dennis Community,” said Bruce McCuaig, president and CEO of Metrolinx.

The 19-kilomtere Crosstown LRT will be completed by 2021 and will connect Mount Dennis in the west with Kennedy Station in the east, with a 10-kilometre underground tunnel in its central section.

Ontario is in the midst of making the largest infrastructure investment in hospitals, schools, public transit, roads, and bridges in the province’s history.

Speaking of batteries, hopefully the batteries will be the newer longer-lasting, fast-charging battery, and hopefully better than lithium-ion. See link. They do have a few years to investigate and research. (If they actually do that.)

You can't even build an emergency generator these days. In the meantime, downtown is host to co-generation plants and have a 500MW gas turbine generator next door in Portlands.

However, since this means no new generation (I wouldn't think the solar roof is going to move the dial for a light rail line), existing power sources will be providing the power to keep this charged - which could include the gas peaker plant in the Portlands.

The gas plant idea was waaay overkill for the task. Kind of like a subway where an LRT will do. Battery makes sense, enough power to ensure safety and clear the system but not attempting to maintain the system indefinitely.

im sorry I dont quite understand. Could you please provide me with an example of this? Ive never heard of such a case of something like this happening, except for every day in the news for the past 5 years.
